Claire Russo Endorses Andria McClellan for Lieutenant Governor
Norfolk, VA — Today, Norfolk Councilmember and candidate for Virginia Lieutenant Governor Andria McClellan announced the endorsement of Claire Russo, a Marine and former candidate for Virginia’s 5th U.S. House district.
“I’m proud to endorse Councilmember Andria McClellan for Lieutenant Governor,” said Claire Russo, a Marine and former candidate for VA-05. “Andria is ready to lead on day one. She will bring her extensive leadership skills, commitment to creating opportunity for all and important local government experience to Richmond. Her problem-solving mindset and pragmatic, progressive approach is exactly what our state needs during the COVID-19 recovery.”
Russo is a Virginia native and joined the Marine Corps at age 23, serving as an intelligence officer. She deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq, where she led a team of Marines targeting insurgent networks and served as a counter insurgency adviser. She returned home and served as a Council on Foreign Relations International Affairs fellow, studying the role of women in combat and conflicts. Claire is a survivor of sexual assault committed by a superior Marine. She successfully took on the military bureaucracy to make sure her attacker was prosecuted and jailed.
“I have admired Claire and her service to our country for many years,” said Councilmember Andria McClellan. “She knows the importance of having a leader in Richmond with hands-on experience and coalition building skills as we recover from our current economic, health and equity crises. It is an honor to have Claire’s support. I look forward to seeking her seasoned and informed counsel on a variety of issues when I become Virginia’s first female Lieutenant Governor.”
Claire Russo joins a growing coalition endorsing Andria McClellan, including Congresswoman Elaine Luria, Norfolk Mayor Kenneth Cooper Alexander, Ph.D., Congressman Glenn Nye, State Senators Lynwood Lewis and Dave Marsden, and numerous local elected officials and community leaders from throughout the commonwealth.
